What Happens to Ashes That Are Not Retrieved?

My mother died in 1948. She was cremated and her ashes were stored at the funeral home. The ashes were never retrieved and I can't find the phone number or address for them. Two questions: What happens to the ashes when they are never retrieved from storage, as a rule? Can you locate this funeral home for me?

I would expect the funeral home, if it is still in business, is still holding the ashes. If it was bought by another funeral home they probably have the ashes.

As to where they are, the best way to find an old funeral home that may have closed or changed names is to go the the state funeral directors association where they were. They should have records on such things. --Jon Roeder
