Why are bagpipes played at firefighters funerals?

I would like to know why the bagpipes are played at firefighters funerals.

My sources tell me that bagpipes were played because most of the fire fighters and police officers were of Irish decent. This started years ago and became a tradition with many fire houses and police departments.

From this tradition there are a number of societies that have been formed to honor this tradition. Here in Chicago, the Emerald Society Pipe Band comes to mind. As I understand this organization, the Emerald Society, is made up exclusively of fire fighters and police.--Stephen Dawson
