Can the American flag from a military funeral be used to fly outside a home?

The father of my brother-in-law was buried with military honors and presented with the American flag. Can that flag be used to fly outside his home or is it strictly a commemorative item to be stored and kept as a reminder?

The flag may be flown out side. FYI the flag you have is a standard government Issue "COTTON" American flag. It will not stand up as well over time as the Nylon flags that are produced for longer outside exposure. It is fine to fly it but if you are going to have it out regularly it may be short lived.--Jon Roeder
