No Insurance for a Funeral--How Do We Pay for It?
How can our family pay for a funeral when our mother didn't have insurance of any kind? Our family can't even afford the funeral.
There may be more options than you think. Some funeral homes offer payment plans that allow you to spread out the payments for a few years to fit within your budget. If the funeral home does not offer a payment plan, you could always check with your local bank to see if they could lend you the money to be paid back over a period of time.
Also, many funeral homes accept credit cards, which could be another option if you have a credit limit that would accommodate that much expense.
In some states, there is some financial assistance available through the Medicaid program for those that meet the income guidelines. If your mother was a veteran, there could be some benefits available to her through the Veterans Administration.
Any of these options would sure be worth checking into. One important thing to keep in mind is to try to keep the funeral expenses down to an affordable level. All funeral homes offer a variety of caskets and services to fit most any financial need. You may even want to give some thought to cremation, a less expensive alternative in most situations.
