Music and the Grieving Process

How has, in your experiences, music helped people through the grieving process?

In response to your question about the use of music, I have found that many grieving people find comfort in music. Sometimes, a certain song can remind us of the person who died and provides memories. Or a song may sum up what we are feeling better than any words we try to verbalize. For some, music can be a form of meditation or relaxation as we try to deal with our grief. And for others, music is a form of escape.

I believe that when we are grieving the death of a loved one, whatever helps us deal with our sorrow or pain is valuable. Memories are important in the healing process and if music can help capture moments of better times or images of those we love, than we should cherish the words and melodies.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you would like additional information about music and grief. -- Jan Borgman
