Choosing Pallbearers

Is there any standard approach to who should be used as Pall Bearers in a funeral? Should immediate family, i.e., sons, daughters etc, ever perform that function?

There are no "standard" procedures for choosing Pall Bearers at a funeral. It used to be uncommon for immediate family to participate in this manner, but that has changed. The only real requirement is that the participants are able to perform the function of helping to carry the body and casket the necessary distances in a dignified and respectful manner. - Ed.
