| | | Walter T. Berndt, "85 going on 86," as he always said, Schofield, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Riverside Medical Center, Waupaca.
Walter was born June 5, 1922, the son of the late Max and Helen (Schwantes) Berndt. He married Jeanette Klingbeil in December 1946. She died in 1991. He then married married Wilma Toman in August 1993; she died in January 2004.
Walter was very proud to have served in the U.S. Army in World War II with the Screaming Eagles, fighting in five major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a retired carpenter, formerly working for the Wergin, Co., and a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Union No. 310 for 65 years. Walter is a member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church-Wels, Schofield.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, "pulling fast ones" and mostly being a terrific "story teller". Shooting the breeze with the cronies from the South End Gang or coffee clutching at the Log Cabin Restaurant during his retirement years was a favorite pastime.
