Donald W. Brandt Sr., 78, Rothschild, died Monday, April 27, 2009, under the care of Kindred Health Care System at Kennedy Park Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Weston, from Alzheimer's disease.
He was born Feb. 28, 1931, to Bill and Lucille (Gates) Brandt in Wausau. Don served four years in the Navy where he met his wife, Joan Coffer. They were married on Feb. 2, 1954, in Norfolk, Va. They returned home to Rothschild to work at his parent's grocery store - Brandt's in Rothschild.
Don taught Sunday School for 14 years at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Rothschild. He was a captain on the Rothschild volunteer fire department, and served as a police officer with the Marathon County Sheriff's Department for 24 years until his retirement.
Officer Don accompanied safety patrollers from the various schools in the Marathon County area on the year-end award trips to Wisconsin Dells and Washington, D.C.
A very proud moment for Don and Joan was when he was given the honor of placing the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in a national ceremony held at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Don and Joan enjoyed their home, spending time together with their family, and especially family getaways on Lake Nokomis in Tomahawk.
Don is survived by his wife, Joan M. Brandt; one brother, Billy Brandt, Fort Myers, Fla.; one son, Donald W. Brandt Jr.; and four grandchildren , Jason Brandt, Jayme Brandt, Ashley Vial and Zackery Sobacki, all of Rothschild. He is preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Cheryl Vial Brandt in 2007.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Hayden-Buettgen Funeral Home, Schofield. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 1, and again from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday, at the funeral home.
