| | | Thoma Xiong, a.k.a. Nhia Soua Xiong, 67, of Rothschild, passed away Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at UW-Hospital and Clinics, Madison.
Nhia Soua was born March 14, 1942, in Hai Thong, Laos, to Zong Chue Xiong and Pang Yang. He married Ka Xiong in 1967 in Laos.
Nhia Soua immigrated to the United States in 1993 from Thailand. In 1962, as a young man, Nhia Soua enlisted with the Special Guerilla Unit, CIA, Battalion 222 and 211, Regimen 26, Region 2 under the control of General Vang Pao for United States to fight in the Secret War in Laos.
In 1965, Nhia Soua was sent to Mong Soy, Laos, to be trained to use the 105mm Howitzer. He was one of the first Hmong soldiers that was sent to be trained in such advanced artillery at that time. With more advanced fighting artilleries being introduced, Lt. Nhia Soua Xiong again, was sent by his superior to be trained. This time, he was sent to Phitsanulok training camp, Thailand, in 1972.
He fought bravely until the end of the war in 1975. Like many Hmong families, his family became refugees. In 1989, he successfully took his family to Thailand and to the United States after four years in the Thai refuge camps. Nhia Soua's family was sponsored by his sister and brother-in-law, Xiong Moua Lee and Chang Xiong Lee of Rothschild. They came to the U.S. much earlier.
