Mrs. Thelma Scates France, 86, passed away Wednesday, August 6, after a long illness. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Mr. Kermit France. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress. She was loved by everyone who knew her and she will truly be missed. She was a member of Newland Church of Christ, Warsaw. She was born January 23, 1922 to Joseph Daniel and Nellie Ester Scates in Ethel, Virginia. As a child, she attended Menokin Baptist Church with her siblings, Violet Hall, Pearl Boyle, Myrtle France, Elsie Edmonds, Hazel Pierson, J.D. Scates, and Leon Scates. She is survived by five children and their spouses, K. Clifford and Jean France of Fredericksburg, Lois and Gary Allensworth of Montross, Bonnie and Steve Kreigh of Richmond, Vermont, Nathan and Beth France of Warsaw, and Beverly and Scott Jones of Montross. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Stacey Allensworth Minor. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 9, at Newland Church of Christ. The family will receive friends from six to 8 p.m. Friday (tonight) at the Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Newland Church of Christ, 372 County Bridge Road, Warsaw, Va. 22572; or the National Parkinson Disease Foundation, 710 West 168th Street, New York, N.Y. 10032.
